To report animal cruelty, please phone 031 579 6501 or our emergency after hours number, 083 212 6103. Don't email or post on Facebook, as these channels are not always monitored.
Animals are sentient beings who share our capacity for emotions like fear, love, pleasure and pain – yet so many people commit acts of cruelty and appear to think little of it. Whilst some cases are the result of ignorance or lack of resources, our files bulge with cases of callous disregard for the suffering of animals:
unwanted kittens euthanised by drowning
unwanted dog pushed out of cars at the side of the freeway
feral cat stoned to death
cat thrown onto a fire
kittens stuffed into a pillowcase and thrown out the window of a 4th floor flat
monkeys shot at or attacked with pangas
dog with broken leg left without veterinary treatment
chained dog starved to death
Our Inspectors enforce the Animals Protection Act (APA) no. 71 of 1962. This legislation empowers them to instigate legal action against abusive and neglectful owners. If found guilty, the perpetrator could face up to 3 years imprisonment and/or a fine of R60000.
Although our inspectors carry out spot checks, they rely on tip offs from the general public. If you know of any animals that is being neglected or treated badly, please contact us. You don't have to give your name if you are worried about repercussions from your neighbours or community.
We are always in need of good second hand clothing, jewellery, household appliances, furniture, books, toys, etc
Please drop off unwanted items at our SPCA in Springfield Park. Instead of cluttering your cupboards, they can be turned into cash to help care for animals in need. We also appreciate donations of pet blankets and dry or canned dog and cat food.
If your donation is large, please call us on 031 579 6534 to arrange for collection.
