When a lost or stray animal is brought into our SPCA, they are first ‘booked in’ and then sent through to our clinic for a health check, and scanned for a microchip. If the animal is microchipped, we immediately contact the owner to let them know their pet is safe with us.
If the animal has no chip or tag, we check through reports of lost pets for a match. In cases where the animal is severely injured or sick, we may euthanase it to prevent further suffering. Healthy animals are kept for seven days, during which we try to locate the owner. After seven days, the animal becomes the property of the SPCA and may be offered for adoption.
