I’m spending my birthday in a kennel – to honour the animals who can’t speak for themselves

This year, on 15 August, I’m choosing to spend my birthday night inside a kennel at the Durban & Coast SPCA. It’s not a comfortable choice. A kennel is cold, lonely, and unfamiliar. But for thousands of animals who arrive here every year, it’s the first place they find themselves after facing fear, abandonment, or injury.

More than 13,000 animals pass through these kennels annually. Each one carries a story – some heartbreaking, some hopeful, all deserving of compassion. When I look into the eyes of a rescue animal, I see more than sadness. I see resilience. I see trust slowly returning. I see a quiet plea: “Please don’t give up on me.” That look stays with you. It stays with me. And it’s the reason I’m doing this.

I’ll be in that kennel for just one night. But the animals who come through these doors don’t know when their waiting will end. Some wait days. Some wait weeks. Some wait months for healing, safety, and a family to call their own. I want to honour their experience, even in a small way, by stepping into their world for one night. And I want my birthday month to help make their wait a little warmer, a little safer, and a lot more hopeful.
