Starved dog

This poor baby was one of the dogs rescued – painfully thin and so scared.

Starving dogs rescued from ‘foster home’

We were recently called out to remove 18 dogs from a foster home. What we found was heartbreaking.

All the dogs were severely underweight, starving, and in shocking condition. One was suffering so badly that the kindest thing we could do was to let it go. The others are now in our care, receiving urgent treatment and the chance to find new and better owners.

This is the reality of what can happen when animals are handed over to unverified individuals or shelters.

  • When you give your pet to “someone who can help”, without proper checks, you are taking a huge risk.
  • Not everyone who claims to rescue animals has the resources, knowledge, or compassion to care for them.
  • Your beloved pet could end up neglected, starving, or worse.

Please surrender pets responsibly

We understand that life happens. Circumstances change. You may have to rethink your ability to care for your pets. Surrendering them is never easy. But how you do it matters.

When you surrender your pets to the SPCA, you are giving them a real chance – not gambling with their future. At the SPCA they will be:

  • Assessed by veterinary professionals
  • Given proper food, shelter, and medical care
  • Placed on a path toward rehabilitation and adoption

The Durban & Coast SPCA is here to help, not judge. But by law, when you sign a surrender form, you are handing over ownership so we can act in the animal’s best interests.
