In a move towards a more self-sustainable future for our SPCA, as well as concern for the environment, we took a leap of faith in June this year and started a small vegetable garden.

Under the guidance of General Manager, Caroline Smith, and staff member, Lesley du Toit (who grows his own veggies at home) part of our grounds were sectioned off, garden beds prepared and seeds planted. Since then we have been rewarded with a small harvest of spinach, broccoli, lettuce and butternut.

“I love gardening,” says Lesley. “And this has been such an awesome project to work on. When our GM outlined her vision, I was only too happy to oversee it.”

We are now in the happy position of being able to offer fresh organic produce, harvested directly from our grounds, for sale every Saturday in our garden nursery from 8am – 12pm. This Saturday is also our Mini-Market, and we will have chilli, jalapenos, brinjal and spinach available.

Planters for saleIn addition we have also started producing wooden planter boxes, which can be made to your specifications (design, size and colour). Plus, flowers and seedlings to fill them are on sale daily.

As the project grows from strength to strength, we hope you’ll choose to buy direct from us to help raise much needed funds for the animals in our care. We are also looking for donations of seedlings, seeds and plants, as well volunteers with green fingers to help out in the garden. Please call Mary on 031 579 6535 or email mary@spcadbn.org.za if you’re keen to volunteer.
