Long arm of the law catches up with Maize's attacker

As one of our supporters, you may remember the case of little Maze, who was the victim of a horrific attack towards the end of 2020. The rest of her family (two adult dogs and two other pups) were stoned to death, but Maze miraculously survived unharmed. She was brought back to our SPCA, showered with love, assurance and plenty of good food, and adopted shortly afterwards.

Little Maze appears to have put the traumatic incident behind her and is living her best life. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for her attacker, who was involved in an accident and passed away shortly afterwards.

Our Inspectorate team went ahead and pressed charges against his accomplice – a 50 year old Verulam man who instigated the attack – and on 15 November last year, he was found guilty and sentenced to a R3 000 fine or three months in prison, two of which were conditionally suspended.

Even though the sentence is a bit lenient, it is unprecedented since it is grounded in ‘common cause’. Inspectorate manager, Candice Sadayan, is pleased to have another successful conviction under her belt, and is relieved that this callous individual is not allowed to own any animal for three years.
