Giving meaning to life

The Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert talk about the two “hungers”.

There is the Great Hunger and there is the Little Hunger. The Little Hunger wants food for the belly; but the Great Hunger, the greatest hunger of all, is the hunger for meaning...

There is nothing wrong in searching for happiness. But of far more comfort to the soul is something greater than happiness or unhappiness, and that is meaning. Because meaning transfigures all. Once what you are doing has meaning for you, it is irrelevant whether you’re happy or unhappy. You are content – you are not alone in your Spirit – you belong.” ― Laurens van der Post

That sense of ‘belonging’ is keenly felt by the members of the Durban & Coast SPCA Bequest Society. Brought together by the abiding love of animals that we all share, we have a vision – an impossible dream perhaps – of a world without cruelty.

And it’s this vision that gives real meaning to our lives. Knowing that our guiding principal of compassion for animals will continue after our lifetime is a deeply satisfying feeling that gives great comfort to the soul.

If you’ve already included the Durban & Coast SPCA in your Will, thank you! Your legacy will enable us to fulfil our Mission as the SPCA, and through this Mission we fulfil our own personal calling. What wonderful meaning this gives to all of our lives!
