Living rough on the streets is no life for a person . . . or a dog. But Jess (who we named after Jock of the Bushveld’s mother) had obviously had a bad experience of humans and was determined to continue fending for herself in a bushy area on the Bluff.
Inspector Ramsamy drove past the area almost every day, trying to catch her. He knew he had to gain her trust and enlisted the help of a nearby resident, Charles. We supplied dog food and this kindly gentleman agreed to feed Jess every day.
Over a month later, progress was evident. Jess overcame her fear enough to come right up to our van to take some dog biscuits from the Inspector. But as soon as he opened the door, she scooted back to hide in the bush. Finally, after weeks of patient effort, Inspector Ramsamy was able to catch her and bring her back to our SPCA.
Jess needed treatment for a minor wound on her foot, as well as plenty of food, love and attention – but finally, this brave little dog came out of her shell and was ready to be placed in a proper home. She’s now a wonderful companion to Mr N. Gabriel and we hope the two enjoy many happy years together.
