Adopting an animal from the SPCA gives it a chance of a better life. But it also changes your life in ways you may not expect.
When I adopted Lucy, I wasn’t fully prepared for her intelligence and energy. I knew she was excitable – but, working at the SPCA, I thought I had it all under control.
The first eight months were very challenging. It took lots of patience, consistency and understanding. But in time, Lucy settled in and now gives me her whole heart.
Every afternoon she waits at the gate for me to come home. Even though she can’t tell time, Lucy seems to just know when I’m getting close. As soon as I arrive, she comes up to the car door and sits patiently for her rub and a few reassuring words. Then she runs off proudly as if to announce she was the first to be greeted.
We never know what animals have been through before they arrive at the SPCA. Some take a little longer to trust, a little longer to feel safe. But when they do, they give you everything.
Animals live in the moment – they don’t hold grudges, they simply love. And perhaps that’s something we can learn from them.
