Our food stocks are running dangerously low

We've never seen our stock room so bare!

Normally, you can hardly get past the door without tripping over huge bags of dog and cat food piled up to the ceiling, and shelves jammed with cans, boxes and sachets of pet food.

But since the increase in VAT and the latest petrol price hike, people who used to drop off generous donations of dog and cat food at our SPCA, simply aren't able to do so any more. And collection trolleys placed in supermarkets take much, much longer to fill up.

Even worse – we've seen a marked increase in the number of pets being brought in to our SPCA ... by owners who simply can't afford to keep them.

So on the one hand, we have more mouths to feed – while on the other, we have less food to go round. And with the colder weather, animals need more food to keep their body temperature up. It's very, very worrying.

Our only hope is that every person in Durban with a heart for animals will rally round now and help buy pet food for the dogs and cats at the SPCA.

Your donation of just R230 buys 10kg of dry dog food, or 9 large tins of Husky or three boxes of pouch meals for a dog or cat recovering in our animal hospital.

With up to 300 dogs in our kennels at any one time, we get through more than 100kg of dry food and 18 large cans of Husky in just one day! That's why we are counting on the good people of Durban to give as generously as possible.

We also welcome in kind donations – almost any brand and type of pet food is suitable. So why not get together with friends or business colleagues to collect pet food and drop it off at our premises in Springfield Park? Or take a selfie of your donation and challenge your friends on social media to get involved too.

Unwanted, lost and ill treated dogs and cats at our SPCA are already frightened, sad and bewildered. Food is not just a necessity – it's also a tremendous comfort to them. So please will you make your donation now. Your kindness and concern really do make all the difference.

Other ways to help animals

If you love animals, please support our efforts to protect them from cruelty and neglect. There are lots of different ways to help.

Volunteering is an enriching experience for anyone who has some free time on a regular basis and wants to make a difference. You need to be over 16 years of age, reliable and have your own transport.

Get a MySchool Card

It costs you nothing, and you'll help animals every time you swipe the card at Woolworths and other participating stores. Be sure to nominate Durban & Coast SPCA as the beneficiary. Download the app from the Apple store or Google play, or click the button to sign up online.
