One day a long, long time ago, a stray tabby cat strolled into the five-star Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga and made it his home.

Skabenga, as he was affectionately named by hotel staff, ruled the Oyster Box like a king, roaming freely, lounging in five-star luxury and quickly becoming a firm favourite with hotel guests.

He died in March 2025 at the age of 19 and Oyster Box staff decided to honour his memory by commissioning local artist and sculptor, Sarah Richards, to create a life-size bronze statue of the beloved cat.

There is a QR code on the base of the statue, enabling visitors to contribute to the work of the Durban & Coast SPCA in honour of Skabenga.
