When you don't have a cosy home of your own, a little kindness goes a long way

Dogs and cats belong in loving homes - not in cages at the SPCA.
Especially at this time of year, when nights are long and cold.

But, despite our best efforts, some pets have to spend weeks, or even months, at the SPCA before they’re adopted. That’s why we try to make their lives here as comfortable as possible. Trusted volunteers walk the dogs and cuddle the kitties.

And, every day, each animal in our care gets a fresh, clean blanket to snuggle into.

As you can imagine, washing the blankets every day takes its toll. Most are completely threadbare and full of holes from being chewed! They’re not much use when icy winds from the river cut through our grounds. And many of our dog beds – moulded plastic on legs to lift them away from cold damp floors – have cracks or pieces missing from being chewed!

We urgently need to replace the worst of the worn out beds and blankets. Please help – by making a contribution online right now.

Unfortunately we can’t make do with the cheap felt type blankets, which disintegrate after two or three washes and clog up the drains. We have to buy good quality, machine washable fleece blankets at a cost of R70 each.

And, with 250 kennels and 40 cat boxes at the SPCA, and half our blankets always in the wash, we need lots of them.

That’s why we are counting on animal lovers like you to help provide a bed and blanket with a donation of R230. If you can donate R460, it will buy two beds and two blankets.

Any amount towards this urgent need will be ‘warmly’ appreciated by our furry orphans – as well as sick and injured animals recovering in our animal hospital. In theatre, animals’ temperatures drop under anaesthetic – and shock often makes them shiver uncontrollably. Being wrapped in a soft warm blanket makes the world of difference!

Hurt ... lost ... frightened ... sad ... Every one of the dogs and cats in our care deserves this small comfort.

They may not have cosy homes of their own ... with indulgent owners who let them hop up on the couch or even share their own beds. But your kindness will ensure that at least they’re warm and safe.

Thank you for caring about animals that have been abandoned or ill treated by humans in the past ... and for helping us to make their lives better.

Other ways to help animals

If you love animals, please support our efforts to protect them from cruelty and neglect. There are lots of different ways to help.

Sponsor a Yard Cat

Provide care and shelter for one of the cats that live permanently at our SPCA because they cannot be re-homed – with your monthly sponsorship gift of just R150.

Volunteering is an enriching experience for anyone who has some free time on a regular basis and wants to make a difference. You need to be over 16 years of age, reliable and have your own transport.

Get a MySchool Card

It costs you nothing, and you'll help animals every time you swipe the card at Woolworths and other participating stores. Be sure to nominate Durban & Coast SPCA as the beneficiary. Download the app from the Apple store or Google play, or click the button to sign up online.

Donate in lieu of a gift

Helping to make a better world for animals is the perfect way to honour a friend or loved one who prefers not to receive gifts for a birthday, anniversary or other celebration.
