Last Christmas, the most magical thing happened ...

On 14 December last year, a little stray dog was brought into our SPCA, and – as usual – the first thing we did was scan him to see if he was micro-chipped.

His owners’ details popped up immediately, and we called them with the good news. They were over the moon to hear from us, and utterly astonished. Because Chippy had been stolen from their home in Jo’burg two years ago.

How we wish Chippy could tell us where he had been all that time, how he escaped, and how he travelled 650km to end up at our SPCA in Springfield Park!

We’ll never know. But what we do know is how wonderful it felt, being able to reunite this little dog with his beloved owners. It was the best Christmas gift ever.

Sadly, these happy stories are few and far between. As we prepare for the annual influx of unwanted, lost, hurt and frightened dogs and cats that flood our SPCA every festive holiday season, we know that most of these pets won’t make it home for Christmas.

Instead, they’ll spend the holidays with us here at the SPCA. And it will take the generous support of animal lovers like you to help us care for them all.

Over the next few months we’ll have to cope with more than 4 000 discarded, lost and injured animals. The number of dogs and cats that arrive here is truly shocking! And while these unwanted animals wait to be adopted by a loving family of their own, we have to provide shelter, food, flea and tick medication, and veterinary care for all of them.

That’s why we need your support today ... and your gift to give these sad animals another chance of a happy life in a loving ‘forever home’.

Your contribution of just R285 buys 10kg of dog food. R360 protects four pets against fleas for a month. R850 pays for vaccinations against rabies, kennel cough and de-worm for 2 small dogs.

Any amount will help ensure that our Inspectors, staff and volunteers are on hand to care for every animal, right through the holidays. So please send your donation today to help provide a safe haven for all the unwanted pets this Christmas.

Other ways to help animals

If you love animals, please support our efforts to protect them from cruelty and neglect. There are lots of different ways to help.

Sponsor a Yard Cat

Provide care and shelter for one of the cats that live permanently at our SPCA because they cannot be re-homed – with your monthly sponsorship gift of just R150.

Volunteering is an enriching experience for anyone who has some free time on a regular basis and wants to make a difference. You need to be over 16 years of age, reliable and have your own transport.

Get a MySchool Card

It costs you nothing, and you'll help animals every time you swipe the card at Woolworths and other participating stores. Be sure to nominate Durban & Coast SPCA as the beneficiary. Download the app from the Apple store or Google play, or click the button to sign up online.
