‘UNWANTED’ IS THE SADDEST WORD
YOU THOUGHT YOU BELONGED …
You were happy when they clipped the lead onto your collar and opened the car door for you. Stuck your nose out of the window and felt the breeze lift your ears. You trotted along beside them through the car park and into the office and sat quietly while they filled in some paperwork.
Then a stranger came and took hold of your lead and tried to take you away. No ways! You pulled back, whined and waited for your person to stop this. But they didn’t. They didn’t even look at you – just turned away and walked back to the car. Not even a goodbye.
It took days for you to realise they were never coming back. Days when you felt so sad and bewildered you couldn’t even eat. You looked past the people who came to feed you and spoke kindly to you. There was only one face you wanted to see … one voice you wanted to hear.
Every week, 60 different versions of this scenario play out at our SPCA. Not all owners are uncaring. Some have fallen on hard times and can no longer afford dog food and vet bills. Those partings are even more heart-breaking.
It’s our job to mend the broken hearts. To help unwanted pets learn to trust again. And to find them new homes where they’ll be treasured for the rest of their lives.
But we need your help too. Please consider making a donation towards the cost of pet food, veterinary treatment, parasite control and hygiene products to keep the kennels clean and safe.
Please help us show surrendered dogs and cats that they’re not unwanted. That someone cares. That their lives matter.
Your generosity really does make all the difference.
