Adopt – don’t shop

Throughout the world, there are too many pets and not enough loving homes

In South Africa alone, there are an estimated 4 million homeless dogs & cats. Unwanted, or the result of unscrupulous backyard breeders, they are left to fend for themselves on the streets, at risk of starvation, disease or injury. And because they have never been spayed or neutered, they continue to breed indiscriminently, creating an ever increasing crisis.

When you adopt a pet from an animal shelter, you not only save that animal’s life, you free up space for another unwanted, neglected, abused or stray dog or cat to take their place.

Why do I have to pay to adopt a pet from the SPCA?

Many people feel that giving an unwanted animal a home, shelter and food should be enough – and it comes as a shock to discover that there’s a fee involved.

It’s not a case of ‘selling’ animals to raise money for the SPCA. The adoption fee covers the cost of ensuring animals for adoption are in top condition, with everything they need to start their new life with you on the right foot.  Just the cost of vaccinations alone is more than the adoption fee.

Your new pet goes home with:

a full heath check

up-to-date vaccinations

micro-chip

Collar & ID tag

spay or neuter to prevent unwanted additions to your family

HOW TO ADOPT

Visit our SPCA to meet dogs and cats in person. Our kennels and cattery are open from 8 am – 4 pm Mon – Fri and from 8 am – 1 pm on Saturday. Staff are available to answer questions and take animals out of their cages so you can interact with them. You may also bring your current dog along to ensure they approve your choice!

One of our inspectors will check your property to make sure it’s suitable for the pet you’ve chosen. There is a R100 fee, which will be deducted from the adoption fee.
Your new pet will be sterilised before being allowed home with you, to prevent unwanted litters.

Home time! Your adoption fee includes a full health check, inoculations, micro chip, ID tag and collar.
