WE KNEW THEY WOULDN’T MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT

When someone called to say there were puppies trapped on a cliff, Inspector Sydney Nkomo rushed to investigate. Scanning the steep rocky cliff face, trying to pinpoint where the plaintive yelps were coming form, his heart fell. This was a situation that called for an experienced rescue team.

By the time they arrived, daylight was fading. Soon, it was completely dark, and the puppies were still trapped on a small ledge. Cold, terrified and alone.

Hours later, after a difficult rescue mission  in near-total darkness, Umfula (river) and Intaba (mountain) were finally brought to safety and taken back to our SPCA.

The first thing they needed wasn’t medical treatment – it was warmth.

Wrapped in soft blankets and surrounded by caring hands, the traumatised pups could finally stop shivering. For the first time in who knows how long, they were safe and warm.

After a bowl of food and a much-needed bath, the puppies were thoroughly checked by our veterinary team.  Both were suffering from severe hookworm infestations and mange. These were not beloved pets. In their short lives, they probably hadn’t known much human kindness.

But now, after two months of treatment, nutritious food, shelter and lots of TLC from our dedicated staff, Umfula and Intaba are bursting with health and playful energy.
