The recent runaway fires that raged through Knysna to Plettenberg Bay were devastating – not only for people, but for animals caught in the blaze.
I was so impressed by the way various animal welfare groups and individuals worked together to ensure that displaced animals were given shelter, food and water, and that those that were burned or injured received veterinary treatment or a prompt end to their suffering if there was no hope of recovery.
Whilst people took to social media to share information about lost and found pets, The Garden Route SPCA’s took in over 60 animals from the Knysna Animal Welfare Society, freeing up much needed space. NSPCA Disaster Teams also raced to help affected animals, including horses and farm animals, domestic pets and wildlife.
In the midst of so much human suffering, it was wonderful to know animals weren’t forgotten. Well done to everyone who helped in any way.
