Many thanks to all who entered – we have so many stunning photographs our judges will have a hard time selecting the winners. Please check back next week to see if your pet is one of those who'll be famously featured on our 2018 Durban & Coast SPCA calendar - or click the link below to view all the entries.

Please read these rules carefully before you begin

  1. The competition is open to everyone, except employees of the Durban & Coastal SPCA and their familes and employees and family members of promotional agencies with whom we work.
  2. You may enter as many times as you wish, but every entry must be accompanied by a minimum donation of R50 to the Durban & Coast SPCA.
  3. Entry fees can only be paid online by Master/Visa card or secure Instant EFT.
  4. The competition aims to showcase the role pets play in our lives – they may be pictured on their own, or interacting with other animals and humans. Pictures of wildlife and exotic pets (snakes, lizards, etc) are not eligible.
  5. You may only submit original photographs owned by you. Images downloaded from the Internet and submitted for the competition will be disqualified and the entry fee will not be refunded.
  6. Images should be of print quality, i.e. 8MB and 3000 px in landscape format (wider than they are deep) and should not have borders or distorting filters applied. Collages will not be eligible to win. Please click here for more tips on quality by our designer.
  7. The best 13 photographs will be selected by a panel of judges. Their decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  8. All photographs submitted become the property of The Durban & Coast SPCA and may be used for promotional purposes.
  9. The competition closes at 12 noon on Friday 13 October 2017.
  10. Winners will be contacted by email or phone and announced on this website.
  11. All 13 winners will receive a free copy of the calendar (valued at R150).
  12. We reserve the right to cancel the competition immediately and without notice.
To ensure your images are chosen for quality as well as adorability, please follow these simple tips:
  1. CAMERA SETTINGS – Check your camera (or camera phone) is set to the maximum resolution. Check your 'settings' on device to change this. We need minimum 8mb file sizes – that's an image 3000 pixels across and about 2000 pixels down.
  2. SAVING YOUR PICS – Upload your images at the maximum resolution available on your camera or phone. No good having a 10mb file on your phone and compressing to 'small' to upload onto the website.
  3. WYSIWYG – All the computer geeks will know this stands for 'What You See Is What You Get'. Sadly this is not the case when moving from the digital world to print, because your screens are 72 dpi (dots per inch) and printing uses 3 000 dpi (dots per inch).
  4. COMPOSITION – So you have your kids party going and your family dog has wrapped himself around every decoration and is standing proudly on the dining room table ... Seeing the photo opportunity you 'seize the day' and reach for your phone. Now is the time to remember these 3 Golden Rules:

Golden Rule #1 All the images need to be landscape (wider than deeper). So the portrait shot of your pet on a tricycle on top of your three year old - no good

Golden Rule #2 Lower your viewing angle. Shots of the top of an animal’s head do not work so well. Unless your cat is perched on top of your fridge, you need to get down on your haunches, or on your tummy and take the shot at their level.

Golden Rule #3 Take more than one picture of a situation. Then you have more to choose from for the perfect pic!
